The foundation course will equip you with the skills and confidence to successfully progress on to the Nursing or Midwifery BSc (Hons) programmes.

Our brand-new Nursing and Midwifery Foundation Programme at Ð԰ɵç̨ (Ð԰ɵç̨) is specifically designed for aspiring nursing and midwifery students who do not meet the entry requirements for undergraduate study but are able to demonstrate they hold the values and attributes required to be a nurse or midwife.

The foundation course will equip you with the important foundational knowledge, confidence and good learning habits required to be successful in higher education and in clinical practice. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of the role of a nurse and midwife to then be able to decide before embarking on your undergraduate degree, which professional path – either nursing or midwifery, is right for you.

Teaching is built around four compulsory, credit-rated Level 3 theory modules, and begins with an in-depth introduction module that supports your transition into university life. Throughout the foundation course you will focus on building your knowledge across a range of key areas that will support your learning at undergraduate level, including anatomy and physiology, professional and ethical standards, reflective learning and critical thinking.

Successful completion of the foundation course, including a minimum of 80% attendance and passing a mid-course interview, will enable you to then progress on to either one of our nursing courses – Adult, Child, Learning Disability or Mental Health or our Midwifery programme. Our goal is to not just get you ready for the next year of study, but to help you feel confident and connected with your chosen professional role. You will have regular support from our team of experienced nursing and midwifery academics, who will support and advise you with your future career aspirations.

What you will study

Introduction to Foundations in Nursing and Midwifery

This introductory module is designed to support your smooth transition into higher education by building the essential academic and numeracy skills needed for success in nursing or midwifery. It lays the groundwork for understanding and interpreting evidence, promoting lifelong learning, and preparing you for progression to NMC-approved degree programmes. The module ensures you gain the confidence and capabilities required to thrive in a graduate-level healthcare education environment.

Foundations of Anatomy, Physiology and Psychology

You will be introduced to the human body systems, and how they are organised and integrated into physiological processes. This will also incorporate how psychology can impact on health engagement and outcomes. It is intended to serve as a foundation for the further study of anatomy and physiology at level 4 and beyond.

Foundations in Health Care Practice

This module offers an essential introduction to the core principles of healthcare practice, with a strong focus on professional and ethical standards guided by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct. You will explore the critical role of effective, compassionate communication in delivering high-quality patient care. The module also provides insight into the roles of nurses and midwives across various settings, including an overview of the four fields of nursing—adult, child, mental health, and learning disabilities—as well as midwifery practice.

Preparation for Professional Practice

This final module prepares you for progression to the BSc (Hons) Nursing or Midwifery programmes by developing the professional skills, values, and personal attributes essential for success in healthcare. With a strong emphasis on resilience, self-awareness, and well-being, the module supports your personal and professional growth in preparation for the demands of clinical practice. You will build confidence through reflective learning, enhance your ability to evaluate experiences critically, and develop key interpersonal and foundational clinical skills—all grounded in core professional values.

Note: All modules are indicative and based on the current academic session. Course information is correct at the time of publication and is subject to review. Exact modules may, therefore, vary for your intake in order to keep content current. If there are changes to your course we will, where reasonable, take steps to inform you as appropriate.

Nursing and Midwifery

At Ð԰ɵç̨ we provide clinical skills and simulation teaching and practice that will enhance your theoretical learning by using a realistic, immersive environment that mimics the practice environments you will encounter during your clinical placements and in your career beyond. This provides our students with opportunities to develop cognitive, practical and interpersonal skills through a comprehensive programme of simulated experiences and clinical skills sessions, allowing you to develop the confidence to perform in the real world.

Ð԰ɵç̨ have invested in extending and enhancing the range of clinical skills and simulation facilities available for health and life science students. We currently have two dedicated spaces on campus that provide flexible teaching and assessment spaces to meet a wide range of student’s needs. The Hawthorn building houses two ward environments, a dedicated midwifery suite; including a birthing pool, radiography suite and bespoke manual handling and paramedicine spaces.

Our designated clinical skills teaching hub in Heritage House offers flexible teaching rooms - designed to replicate the changing environments of clinical practice, a soft furnished space, audiology suite and observation rooms. Students benefit from the audio /visual technology that allows sessions to be recorded and live streamed, facilitating remote learning opportunities. This technology also enhances your learning opportunities through the use of meaningful debriefing of teaching and simulation sessions allowing you to reflect on your practice and improve in both ability and confidence before taking your learning into the real world.

Our expertise

The teaching team is made up of registered nurses, midwives and other health care professionals, who are qualified teachers and many actively engaged in research and clinical practice.

Several of our teaching staff have doctoral level qualifications and bring their areas of specialism into the breadth of teaching on the course, a few of which have earned the prestigious title of ‘Queens Nurse’. The Queen’s Nurse title is awarded to nurses who demonstrate high standards of patient care, clinical expertise, and leadership in community nursing. These professionals are known for their passion, person-centred approach, and commitment to driving innovation in healthcare.

Many of our lecturers have also gained qualifications in different care specialties and have a major role in teaching NHS staff and qualified Nurses and Midwives on our range of professional CPD and post-registration courses.

Block teaching

With block teaching, you’ll learn in a focused format, where you study one subject at a time instead of several at once. As a result, you will receive faster feedback through more regular assessment, have a more simplified timetable, and have a better study-life balance. That means more time to engage with your Ð԰ɵç̨ community and other rewarding aspects of university life.
